Be Wise | May 4, 2020 standard

Psalm 2 2:1 Why do the nations rebel? Why are the countries devising plots that will fail? 2 The kings of the earth form a united front; the rulers collaborate against the Lord and his anointed king. 3 They say, “Let’s tear off the shackles they’ve put on us! Let’s free ourselves from their ropes!” 4 The one enthroned in heaven laughs in disgust; the Lord taunts them. 5 Then he angrily speaks to themand terrifies them in his rage, saying, 6 “I myself have installed my kingon Zion, my holy hill.” 7 The king says, “I will announce the Lord’s decree. He said to me: ‘You are my son! This very day I have become your father! 8 Ask ...

For His Glory | May 1, 2020 standard

1 Pet 4 4:1 So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin, 2 in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires. 3 For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. 4 So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. 5 They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to ...

Chosen For… | April 28, 2020 standard

1 Peter: 1 1:1 From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those temporarily residing abroad (in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, the province of Asia, and Bithynia) who are chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by being set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with Jesus Christ’s blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure! 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 that is, into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. It is reserved in heaven for you, 5 who by ...

Acts 11:1–18 11:1 Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles too had accepted the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers took issue with him, 3 saying, “You went to uncircumcised men and shared a meal with them.” 4 But Peter began and explained it to them point by point, saying, 5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, an object something like a large sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came to me. 6 As I stared I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild ...

Outsiders Now In | April 20, 2020 standard

Acts 10:1–8 10:1 Now there was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort. 2 He was a devout, God-fearing man, as was all his household; he did many acts of charity for the people and prayed to God regularly. 3 About three o’clock one afternoon he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God who came in and said to him, “Cornelius.” 4 Staring at him and becoming greatly afraid, Cornelius replied, “What is it, Lord?” The angel said to him, “Your prayers and your acts of charity have gone up as a memorial before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa and summon a man named Simon, who is ...

Acts 6:8–7:53 6:8 Now Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. 9 But some men from the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, as well as some from Cilicia and the province of Asia, stood up and argued with Stephen. 10 Yet they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. 11 Then they secretly instigated some men to say, “We have heard this man speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 They incited the people, the elders, and the experts in the law; then they approached Stephen, seized him, and brought him before the council. 13 They ...

Role & Responsibility | April 11, 2020 standard

Acts 6:1–7 6:1 Now in those days, when the disciples were growing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Greek-speaking Jews against the native Hebraic Jews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the twelve called the whole group of the disciples together and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to wait on tables. 3 But carefully select from among you, brothers, seven men who are well-attested, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this necessary task. 4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 The proposal pleased ...

Romans 5-8: Alive standard

Real life, real freedom, real hope. When the Apostle Paul brought the gospel to Thessalonica he made a lot of enemies. His opponents said to the town council, ‘These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also’ (Acts 17:6 ESV). There’s actually a lot of truth in that accusation. Paul’s message, the gospel of God, does turn the world upside down. In the gospel people who deserve death are made alive. They’re declared right before God by faith in Jesus Christ and are freed, filled with hope and completely transformed. That good news changes individuals, families, whole communities. The book of Romans unpacks that good news. So come and hear about the real life, real freedom ...

The Crucified King standard

Mark 8-16: The Crucified King There’s no doubt about it – Christians believe the strangest message. It’s a message that is ‘a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles’. What’s the message? ‘We preach Christ crucified’ (1 Cor 1:23). That might be a familiar phrase, but think about that clash. It’s like saying we trust the Queen and her hanged. Or we tell everyone about our CEO and him electrocuted. The Christ is the long-anticipated and glorious King, chosen by God to rule God’s people, to bring God’s kingdom into the world. Crucifixion is the most shameful death, a death reserved for traitors and the lowest scum of criminals. The person Christians follow is Jesus: the Crucified King. Mark’s ...
